Pikes Waterfront Lodge perfect for families, year-round
The great thing about Pikes is the atmosphere of Alaskana, everywhere you look. From the wood-paneled walls to the vintage items scattered around the property, the folks at Pikes strive to bring a little bit of 49th state history to every visitor, of every age. Our son, now 8, loves Pikes for the wide expanse of property that, during the summer months, is green and lush and full of resident ducks. Yes, ducks. In the fashion of the Biltmore Hotel, Pikes owns its own flock of mallards, and every night, staff round ’em up and deliver them to their own “digs” near the scenic Chena River. Rooms at Pikes are clean, comfortable, but a bit small. Families can, however, request a suite in which to spread out, but we generally do fine with a standard room. Ask for a room overlooking the river and adjacent walking trail. Summer/fall months bring lots of daylight to walk, jog, or kayak, and its a treat to sit on the little deck and enjoy the sounds of outdoor recreation. Pikes also offers a free breakfast and FREE ice cream for all who stay on the property, something parents will relish offering to their kids. A shuttle to/from the airport and some local attractions is available. Non-smoking, some pet rooms.
Tips for Families
Pikes is very close to the Fairbanks airport, but do rent a car if you want to explore the greater Fairbanks area (you should). The adjacent restaurant is fair, so head downtown for more local favorites. Take advantage of the walking trail and access to Riverboat Discovery in the summer. Some cribs are available, but ask well in advance of your visit. Cookies every afternoon!
